Strange Stories in Crypto 2024 - Part 2

Authors

The end of the year is always an occasion to look back and summarize the events that have happened. Crypto is no exception, with countless stories that are laughable, even unbelievable. Here are some strange events in the crypto world in 2024.

The year 2024 saw many unusual events in the cryptocurrency sector. The explosion of coin memes has spawned somewhat bizarre characters, crypto conferences run with many dilemmas, and politicians actively solicit funding from the cryptocurrency community.

Here is the next part of the series “Strange Stories in Crypto 2024”, summing up the remarkable moments in 2024, somewhat reflecting the current situation of the cryptocurrency market.

Fake Satoshi

Last October, the crypto community was rocked when Stephen Mollah, a British macroeconomist of Asian origin, took a surprise He claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto. The mysterious father of Bitcoin.

Not only did it stop there, during an event that charged an entrance fee of up to £500, Mollah strong-mouthed himself as the creator of the Twitter, ChatGPT and Eurobond logos.

He spent more than an hour at the event, promising to transfer Bitcoin from the Genesis block to prove his identity. However, so far, this promise has not been fulfilled.

Is Binance Racist?

In June, Binance posted a meme on X is perceived by the online community as containing racist content.

Binance later apologized and blamed an intern on the media team for being “culturally ignorant” so he did not recognize the racist meaning of the meme. Binance admits this is their fault and will rectify the matter by... hiring a new intern.

Go to jail for sending money to CEX

The sacrificial story occurred when Crypto.com accidentally transferred $6.8 million to a woman, instead of $65 as requested. The woman and her boyfriend quickly spent $4.42 million of that on shopping, including artwork and four homes in Australia.

However, “short on joy,” they were caught as they were preparing to fly to Malaysia, a country not very friendly to Bitcoin. In the end, the woman spent 209 days in jail and returned the entire amount and the property purchased with that mistaken amount.

KOL “scolded” for lack of understanding of crypto?

Iggy Azalea, the famous Australian rapper and model, decided to enter the crypto market by creating her own coin called MOTHER.

Despite being backed by the community for being the rare celebrity to actually care about and invest in her own token project, Iggy Azalea has also had some memorable “gag” moments.

When criticized by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, the singer questioned what he was doing with ETH gas fees. This question earned her ridicule from the Crypto Twitter community because the gas fee does not belong to Buterin at all but is used to maintain and develop the Ethereum ecosystem.

The “crazy” parties of the crypto world

Azalea also caught the eye when she hosted a lavish party full of strippers in Singapore. The party produced the most shocking videos of the year, typified by the scene of Su Zhu, founder of bankrupt hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, throwing money at a girl who was dancing twerking on him.

In addition, there are scenes of DeGods President Sunny dropping a girl he's holding on the air in a “sensitive” pose, and a guy who gets “overexcited” with a cash-covered stripper in the throes of his friends' cheers.

Tweet: “RIP ma'am”

One trader posted a screenshot of the DEX Screener next to his dying grandmother in her hospital bed, accompanied by the tweet: “RIP Grandma. However, I am putting her assets on the market, which is what she wants.”

This action has caused much controversy in the crypto community.

Malaysia and steps backward over Bitcoin mining rig destruction

Malaysian authorities have destroyed 985 Bitcoin mining platforms in a nationwide crackdown on electricity theft.

The community is ironic that, instead of destroying these precious “miners”, it is unlikely that investing in Bitcoin will help Malaysia improve its GDP ranking in the world (currently 37/195).

Auction of “fame”

In 2017, Christian Langalis, a 22-year-old intern, scribbled the words “Buy Bitcoin” on a yellow note and appeared with Janet Yellen in a live televised House Financial Services Committee hearing.

This action caused the price of Bitcoin to rise by 3.7% shortly thereafter and turned Langalis into a Bitcoin hero. In April, Langalis auctioned the legendary note for 16 Bitcoins (about $1.019 million).
