What is DAWN?

DAWN (dawninternet) is a protocol for building a decentralized, trustless Internet, with the goal of reducing dependence on monopolistic Internet service providers. DAWN has three main components:

Incentive Mechanism : Using tokens to reward network members based on contribution and performance.
Decentralized Consensus Mechanism: Applying mechanisms such as “Proof of Bandwidth” and “Proof of Location” to ensure network performance.
Bandwidth Marketplace : Providing a platform for buying and selling connectivity, turning saving and reselling internet into an investment.

How DAWN works?

Each member of the DAWN network assumes one of the following roles:

Bandwidth Node (BN): Provides wholesale internet connectivity from data centers or connects directly to the Internet Exchange, using >1Gbps radios to provide connectivity to nodes within a 5-mile range.
Distribution Node (DN): Commercial or residential buildings connect to the BN and share that connectivity via antennas, forming a self-healing wireless mesh.
End-User (EN): End users consume bandwidth from DNs. Foundation: Manages smart contracts and global network-layer services.

Highlights of DEPIN DAWN project

DAWN uses vendor-agnostic, general-purpose wireless equipment operating on unlicensed high frequencies such as 60GHz and 6GHz, combined with an electromechanical antenna system (RAS) for scalable and self-healing connectivity.

The routing element uses a general-purpose computer with cloud-based routing and supports IPv6 as the primary protocol, but also supports IPv4 in dual-stack mode.

The authentication mechanism and service contracts are based on “Proof of Bandwidth,” which measures network performance and rewards node participation with DAWN tokens. Service contracts are divided into Federal, Backbone, and Access, with token payments based on bandwidth, data, and location. The blockchain uses Solana to implement service contracts, with “Proof of Backhaul,” “Proof of Service,” and “Proof of Location” contracts secured by validators and optimistic oracles.
